It’s warm and sunny – do you know what that means? It’s the perfect time to drop the kids off at Grandma’s house for a week (or two!) and enjoy some one-on-one time with your significant other! Summer is a great season to get out and about spend some precious time with your hubby.
Stuck for inspiration? These are my favorite cheap summer date ideas.
Board games
Okay, I know board games are usually played indoors – but if you’ve got an outdoor dining area, this is the time to use it. Set up your favorite board game, serve some cheese and crackers and open a bottle of wine, and you’ve got yourself a fun summer evening activity. Dinner optional!
Indoor camping
This is a super cute idea that will take you back to your childhood. If you’ve got carpet in your living room, set up a sleeping area with blankets and pillows underneath a fort made out of sheets draped over the lounges. Make s’mores in the microwave and tell ghost stories. Of course, you could do all this outdoors, too, if you have a tent and a fire pit. But it’s much easier to set up inside!
Scenic driving
I love going on long summer afternoon drives. It’s a great way to see your local town and any other nearby towns. Take a camera and stop every so often to take a picture together in a new spot. Be sure to pack your favorite CDs so you can have a singalong in the car.
Stargazing
Balmy summer nights make it easy to stay outside and enjoy looking up at the stars. Double romance points if you can do this near a beach or a lookout. Bring a sweet snack from home to share, like some chocolate.
Dog park
Confession: My hubby and I are dog lovers. If you’re the same, you’ll know that local dog parks are some of the most enjoyable places to visit. We love taking our dog to the dog park together and spending the morning there. We usually bring hot coffees in a take-away cup from home, too. Even if you don’t own a dog, you can go and play with new dogs and socialise with the owners.
Dive bar
If you don’t go out very often, treat yourself to a night at your local dive bar. Challenge each other to a game of pool or darts, or sit down and watch the live band (for free!). To save money, have dinner before you go, and only have a couple of drinks each.
Paint
This is an awesome bonding activity for those who like being a little bit creative. Cover a table with newspaper or an old sheet, grab a bottle of wine to share, pop on some music and you have yourself a great date night at home. Sit opposite each other at the table and paint each other’s portraits as you talk. This works best if you each have an easel, which you can usually pick up cheaply at the dollar store.
Bucket list
A great way to learn more about each other (even if you’ve been together for years upon years!) is to sit down together of an evening and write out a bucket list of activities you’d like to do together. Make a night of it by sitting outside, relaxing and sharing a bottle of red wine.
