8 Secret Tricks for Saving Money at Home Depot

If you love DIY, you’ll know how addictive weekend trips to Home Depot can be! My hubby is ADDICTED! (And as a byproduct, I am too). Home Depot is great for DIY and small projects around the home. However – depending on what you’re buying – it isn’t always cheap if you don’t know where to look for the savings.

That’s where we come in! Check out our secret tricks for making your dollar go further at Home Depot. Do we smell a new home improvement project on the cards?

Save at The Home Depot

Win $5,000 for your Opinion

Home Depot receipts contain a special code and password for their customer survey. The customer survey takes no more than 5 minutes to complete and has a sweepstake with a $5,000 prize – follow the steps in our article on the HomeDepot.com/Opinion Survey – best of luck from 5starsaver!

Look out for markdowns

There are plenty of deals to be found throughout Home Depot if you know where to look. As you walk down the store aisles, it’s a good idea to actively look for price markdowns on the end caps. You might even get lucky and find a markdown on the product you’re looking for.

Also be sure to keep an eye out for discounted paint in the “oops paint” aisle. This is where you can find big savings on paint that are not the color that the customer asked for or are slightly mistinted.

Rent tools instead of buying

A lot of the time, many tools tend to be one-use only (at least they are in my house!). This makes buying expensive hardware tools a waste of money in the long run. What’s great about Home Depot is that you can rent many different kinds of tools and equipment for a fraction of the price of buying them outright. So if you know you’ll only need a specific piece of equipment for a day or so, you can save money (and storage space) by choosing to rent it for a limited time.

Use eligible discounts

Home Depot offers a unique 10 percent discount on Memorial Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day with proof of service. If you know a veteran, be sure to let them know so you can get this fantastic saving! There is also a 10 percent discount every single day for active-duty service members with a valid military ID.

Don’t forget about coupons

Coupons are your best friend when shopping at Home Depot (or anywhere, really). Before you head into the store, be sure to check the web for coupon websites that offer amazing discounts on a variety of Home Depot products – that new outdoor setting won’t seem too far from reach after a big discount! Other great ways to find coupons and special offers from Home Depot is to subscribe to text message and email alerts – they even send you a $5 off coupon just for signing up.

Keep an eye on one-day deals

Home Depot’s ‘Special Buy of the Day’ allows shoppers to purchase specific products at a heavily discounted price for one day only. They are often great deals on things to use on home improvement projects that you definitely do not want to miss. Sign up to their Special Buy of the Day email list to stay in the loop.

Don’t shop at competitor stores

Home Depot has a great offer where they will beat the price on any identical in-stock item that is also available at a competitor’s store. Not only will they beat the price, but they’ll take an extra 10 percent off too! To take advantage of this great offer, you must take the competitor’s ad into Home Depot with you when you make the purchase.

Get your money back or score free products

Many of Home Depot’s more expensive products are offered with a rebate or an additional item along with purchase. Before you go in store, check Home Depot’s online rebate center to see if you can get any cash back or freebies with your purchase. It’s as easy as searching by brand, product, ZIP code or model number.
