Sometimes there’s nothing better than a trip to McDonald’s – at least my kids certainly seem to think so! What’s great about McDonald’s is that you can find one almost anywhere you go (they’re an especially welcome sight during a long car trip with noisy kids). And personally, I find those golden arches very comforting, because I know the food there doesn’t come with a huge price tag.
What you might not know about McDonald’s is that with a few little tricks you can get some great value menu items for a lot less. Check out our favourite tricks for getting more bang for your buck at McDonald’s.
Order off the value menu
The best way to get more for your money at Mickey D’s? Simply order off the dollar menu. This is a great option if you don’t want to go all out with a big meal, as you can choose from a bunch of cheap sandwiches, hamburgers, drinks and sides without having to order too much food than you need. But if you’re hungry, try doubling up on dollar menu items and you’ll be just as satisfied as you would be with a meal!
Check for new item promotions
At McDonald’s, there are menu staples – like the Quarter Pounder with Cheese and the Big Mac – but there are also new and seasonal items popping up all the time. McDonald’s often like to promote these items by offering them at a discounted price akin to the dollar menu prices. Try checking the menu for new items or ask the cashier about any new products.
Remember that seniors drink free
If you or a loved one is 55 or older, don’t forget that senior citizens get free tea and coffee at McDonald’s! Most McDonald’s stores follow this rule and will give over 55s a free drink with any purchase. Remember to remind your cashier of this rule upon ordering!
Skip the supersize
One of the unique things about McDonald’s is the ability to supersize your meals. And when you’re hungry, this can seem like a pretty tempting offer! Supersize meals are great value – if you’re that hungry. But nine times out of ten, you eat what you can and then throw the rest in the trash. It’s better value to order a meal that you know you’ll be able to eat, because throwing away food is equal to throwing away money.
Look for newspaper coupons
If your household buys the newspaper, you’ll notice that there are often coupon flyers to be found inside the paper. Sometimes, there are McDonald’s coupons for free or discounted items. A great idea is to cut these out and keep them in your purse for the next time you happen to stop at McDonald’s.
Buy a coupon calendar
Sometimes, certain McDonald’s stores across the country will have coupon calendars for sale for only a few dollars. These calendars have some serious savings on typical menu items each month and, if you go to McDonald’s frequently, can end up saving you a lot of money over the course of the year. Ask your local McDonald’s store – you might get your hands on one of these great calendars!
