Walmart is a frugal shopper’s dream. Not only do they usually have the lowest prices, but they also have almost anything that you can think of! I love visiting Walmart to pick up any groceries, home essentials, beauty supplies, gardening and DIY basics… The list goes on!
Even though Walmart already has some of the lowest prices around, there are a few simple things you can do to make sure you are getting the best deal possible.
Shop early in the morning
If you want to buy perishables, be sure to be in store around 8am. This is the time when a variety of meats and other perishable food products get discounted. This is because they need to mark down the price in order to sell the meat quicker and therefore reach the “sell by” date faster. If you’re going to buy meat this way, make sure you use it that day or freeze it as soon as you get home for future use.
Buy baked goods from yesterday
While you’re looking for great deals on meat early in the morning, be sure to check the bakery department as well. This is where bread and other baked goods are almost certain to be marked down for a quick sale. Day-old bread is fine to eat, and if you’re not going to eat it all right away, simply freeze it until you need it.
Even though Walmart already has very low prices, there’s no harm in saving more! Using Walmart coupons is a great way to save money on items that you’ve got your eye on. Check couponing websites or catalogues that you receive in the mail for coupons, and remember to bring them in with you next time you go shopping.
Take advantage of price matching
Walmart will price match on any item that is available for a cheaper price at a competitor’s store, so it’s worthwhile to shop around online to see if any items you are planning to buy are available for cheaper elsewhere. All you need to do is bring in the ad with you to show to the cashier. Worth it, I say!
Shop online and use in-store pickup
If you’re too busy to go in store but still want to take advantage of price matching, it’s a good idea to shop online (yes, you can do price matching on the Walmart website too!) and pickup the items in store. Usually, the items sold online will be available for pickup within 24 hours – and often on the same day. Just select free pickup and your store location when you view your online shopping cart.
Download the Walmart app
If you’re someone who has a habit of budgeting, making shopping lists and checking prices (and you should be!), the Walmart app will save you time and money. On the app, you can have a look at the weekly specials, check in-store and online prices, check availability of items and make a visual shopping list.
